Tips for Children’s Oral Health

Smile Vermont recommends the following tips for parents to ensure good oral health for their babies:

  • Before a baby’s teeth come in, make sure to clean a baby’s gums with a moist cloth after meals and before bed
  • Don’t put a baby to sleep with a bottle
  • Discontinue bottle-feeding a baby sometime between 9 and 12 months
  • Whenever a child drinks from a sippy cup, make sure they are sitting up rather than lying down so that they do not use their teeth to hold onto the cup
  • A baby’s first dental appointment can be scheduled at age one

Smile Vermont recommends the following tips for parents to ensure good oral health for their children:

  • Encourage brushing and flossing after each meal
  • Be mindful of your child’s sugar intake
  • Ensure your child is getting the fluoride they need to maintain healthy teeth; if you are on a private well system, it is especially important to ask your dentist about the best way to ensure fluoride consumption; one easy step is to be sure your child uses fluoride toothpaste
  • Make sure your child sees a dentist every six months for a check-up
