Tips for Adult Oral Health

The American Dental Association recommends that you:

  • Brush teeth twice a day and floss once a day
  • Replace your toothbrush each 3-4 months as bristles become worn out and less effective at removing food from teeth
  • Drink fluoridated water
  • If you smoke, consider over-the-counter smoking cessation products or classes as smoking increases your risk for gum disease and tooth loss and decay.
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a check-up. Remember to bring to each appointment:
    • An up-to-date list of medications
    • An up-to-date list of medical conditions and allergies
    • Contact information for your other health care providers
    • Emergency contact information
    • Dental insurance card or Medicaid card
    • Dentures or partials
  • Additionally, seniors should consider the following:
  • If you wear dentures, clean them each day by placing them in cleansing solution overnight and try to remove dentures for at least 4 hours each day
